For all the busy moms struggling with the mental load of what to cook daily, let me tell you how Hungryroot is saving my life right now! On any given day, about a million things are running through my mind, from school drop-off and pick-up, weekend soccer games, bedtime, and playdates. The last thing I truly want to do is think about what to cook. This is why Hungryroot was a perfect fit for me.
In complete transparency, the brand reached out to me to try it for a week, and here are my honest thoughts. I’ve never signed up for any subscription delivery service for food or groceries, so I was willing to give it a try.
What is Hungryroot?
While this may look like a meal kit box, it’s so much more. Hungryroot provides customers with full-size groceries tailored to their dietary preferences and the number of meals they plan to cook each week. This is not a meal delivery service like HelloFresh, where the food is pre-portioned; instead, it offers personalized meal plans and groceries delivered to your door. Once the box of groceries arrives, recipes are provided so you can cook easily and not have to worry about coming up with meals on your own.
Sounds like a win-win to me, right? So, how does it work?
How does Hungryroot work?
Take a quiz, curate your shopping cart, and wait for groceries to arrive. All you have to do is cook! Each week, Hungryroot will offer new suggestions based on your taste. You are free to edit your delivery to get exactly what you want before it ships.
There are over 1,000 different grocery items and over 15,000 chef-crafted recipes for you to choose from. If needed, you can easily cancel, skip, or reschedule a delivery on their app or through your account on the website.
Ok seems simple enough. So let’s talk about what I loved.

What I loved
Customization:
My favorite part of Hungryroot is the ability to customize my meals. For my custom grocery order, I focused on quick, high-protein meals to help me stay on track with my fitness goals and to prepare something on the go due to my busy schedule. There are numerous dietary customizations available for Vegans, Vegetarians, Pescatarians, and the list goes on. I also noted that my toddler has a tree-nut allergy, so those foods were also avoided.
Familiar Brands:
My second favorite part is that some of the groceries that were delivered were the same brands I purchase at the grocery store. This made it easy for my family to get accustomed to the meals, especially my toddler. If you’re a mom, you know how crucial familiar foods are to dinner time. My delivery included an amazing frozen margarita pizza, which we usually purchase from Costco. The added snacks were also a nice treat!
The groceries also met my high standards – food made from ingredients free from partially hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. Everything wasn’t organic, as I usually prefer, but that was okay since I was trying it out for a moment.
Easy to Follow Recipes:
Nothing makes me angrier than seeing a great meal on social media that I want to recreate, only to find out there are a million steps, about 50 ingredients, and a 2-hour cook time. No, thank you! But with Hungryroot, it was the exact opposite. Everything you needed was part of your grocery delivery, and the quick recipe guide allowed me to cook meals in under 30 minutes.
What I didn’t love
Although the groceries have great ingredients, I would prefer more organic options. Also, the portion sizes seemed a bit on the smaller side, or it could have just been the meal options I chose. I’m not sure, but my husband likes to eat a lot, so bigger portion sizes would have been great.

Is Hungryroot Worth it?
Yes! Can you probably get a week’s worth of groceries cheaper if you do the shopping yourself? Yes again. My total bill was about $200 for 8 meals worth of groceries for a family of 3, plus a few snacks, which is typically what I spend on groceries in a week regularly. So I did have to supplement other grocery items.
However, as a busy toddler mom, I am not ashamed to outsource as much as I can. Anything that will lessen the mental load of motherhood, I’m here for it! Ordering groceries online, skipping a trip to the grocery store, and having meals perfectly planned and laid out for me to cook step by step is a win!
